My family just loves coffee matters, my son said the hot chocolate is the best in town. Keep up the good work.

Absolutely not what I expected..... pushy staff and management was there asking people with laptops to leave. i didnt hav my laptop with me but seriously guys your a coffee shop. a time limit and no laptop use is a BS policy in that kinda environment. plus too hot and bugs everywhere gross

I WOULD HAVE TO GIVE COFFEE MATTERS A DEFINITE

The coffee was okay, the decor was okay, the staff were okay. Please learn how to use the espresso machine. Thanks.

Hava Java Forever!

From the time that you enter, you are engulfed in the warmth atmosphere and rich aroma off freshly roasted coffee. As i mosey up to the counter I'm welcomed by some of the nicest-friendly smiling faces i have ever seen,(this tells me I'm in for a real treat) what a way to start your day!
wonderful impressions and a good day to be had!
After 25+ yrs. of loyal customer service and retention as my professional back ground, I have come to respect each clients wishes and comments (it is true that you cannot satisfy all your guest all the time, due to space and time) and i have learned to live and work within those guide lines, but
Coffee Matters is a speciality shop where each and every client has a different taste for freshly made goods. In a speciality shop you will not find a production line, hand crafted goods take a little longer (now i can appreciate that). Laptop users (i am one) have to learn and respect that there are other people to be served as will, use your time wisely!
My quality rating for this new company would be Very Good ++ as they are a young company and can only grow to newer heights from experience and timely customer satisfaction moves. I do not know the proprietors, but what they have accomplished so far has been good! All The Best......Terry

my favorite coffee shop anywhere.

I've been at Coffee Matters for many times in the past. At first, I thought it was a fantastic place, as I loved the European style of its interior decor. But I haven't gone back since my experience of its time limit policy. It isn't a comfortable coffee house any more but a greedy coffee company....

2008-07-10 08:45:06

Staff wasn't friendly...or only to me, just because I'm a minority. The restaurant is fancily decorated, and its coffee doesn't taste as good as Starbucks'.

2008-06-11 17:11:53

Just excellent! My 82 year old Mom and I went for lunch and the staff were great. We loved the atmosphere and the bright decor. We wish you every success.

Superb! It's really great to have a stylish, comfortable coffee house in St.John's. The Coffee and atmosphere are great. My new number one spot.
Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Coffee Matters. I've been a number of times but brought along several friends who really enjoyed their lunch. The three amigos dessert is out of this world. I'm happy that you're not a foreign owned franchise but made and owned right here. Congratulations!

I really want these guys to succeed but they must do something about the terrible customer service. I waited for 15 min just to get a coffee all because the woman behind the counter was more interested in talking on the phone than serving customers. Clean house and get some staff that will serve the patrons. Good Luck.

Been to coffee matters several times, on each occasion the sandwich and coffee were great. I really like to know what is that crispy wafer on the bottom of the palet d'or? The dessert is paradise.Don't change a thing.

2008-05-13 18:31:09

I've been to Coffee Matters several times and have been unable to get table because 3 or 4 laptop users have set up seperate tables with ONE person at each table. I use my laptop too but setting limits makes sense when other people (like me) are waiting. Really great place by the way..and worth the wait.

2008-04-29 17:27:27

Went to Coffee Matters today. Service was very substandard. To the point that I waited almost 15 minutes to be served at 445pm. The clerk was slow, slow, slow. Coffee was good. Dessert case looked nice and chocolates looked nice. While waiting for my slow service, and there was only one person ahead of me in line, I noticed the sign re no wi-fi or laptop use during lunch and the timelimit on drinking a cup of coffee - not very inviting signs for someone who would have come back with my laptop between business appointments. Still trying to figure the concept out, is it a coffee shop with wireless like a Starbucks, or is it a cafe with coffee sandwiches and desserts, or is it a chocolatier shop. Too much going on.

Finally, the decor is very nice - but lose the plywood table tops that were poorly routered. While I got my order to go I still noticed that they were not in keeping with the other higher end elements. Someone missed the mark there.

I'll give your Military Road location a second chance and check out Water Street. Hoping things improve.

first class all the way, desserts are awsome.

2008-03-26 16:45:07

This is a quality restaurant in every sense. From food to the detailed locations, Coffee Matters is about experience. Without a doubt Coffee Matters sets a new level for Cafes in St. John's and is not comparable to anything else I have experienced. I will still hit Tim's and Hava Java for coffee from time to time, but when I want to relax with quality and atmosphere there is nothing like Coffee Matters!

I visited coffee matters too again today and I have to say it was a very enjoyable experience. I wrote my comments yesterday but neglected to state the desserts ARE NOT BOUGHT AT COSTCO! They are made on site by a house chef, whom I must add, is an excellent one. All their foods are home-made except their bread which comes from Sweet Temptations fresh baked daily. The statement previous by another patron that desserts are bought from Costco is definitely false. Go by Coffee Matters and ask about their chef! You'll get all the facts. VERY ENJOYABLE DELECTABLE HOME MADE DESSERTS!!! Their Mediteranean grilled vegetable sandwich is oh so good! Thanks again for a very enjoyable visit.

Coffee matters and Coffee Matters Too are by far the most notorius places in St John's for atmosphere, desserts, service, decor and overall quality. I have read some of the reviews and I really believe the people who are negative about this business are people who just don't know how to enjoy delectable desserts, sandwiches, salads, soups, coffees, lattes, mochas and just the overall experience. I have only recently learned of this place and have visited there 3 times in 3 weeks the cost is not a problem for me because I believe you get what you pay for. My experiences have been awesome and I really recommend to everyone to try it for yourself. You'll love it! Great job, guys, keep up the good work!! Congratulations and I wish you great success in your future.

I feel sorry for coffee matters, they seem to do everything wrong. The $8.00 desserts are from costco, the coffee is weak and the cups are dirty oh yes the staff well- I guess the customer is always wrong. Go anywhere but.

2007-11-21 10:48:30

I really like the atmosphere and decor of Coffee Matters but some of the things that really matter just don't make the grade. I find the coffe reasonably good, not excellent like I would expect, but I find the hot chocolate appalling. It is consistently watery tasting and not at all rich and creamy as one would expect in a good coffee shop. My friend doesn't drink coffee so he ordered the hot chocolate frequently when we first started going there, each time asking for it to be made stronger until he just gave up on it after never having once received a tasty enough cup of it. We saw it being made once and it's from a bottled syrup, not a cocoa powder. The syrup is from a reputable chocolatier but it's still an odd way to make hot chocolate. Perhaps the staff were never properly trained on how a cup of good hot chocolate should taste. They never seemed to really understand what we meant when we asked for it to be stronger. It usually came just a whole lot sweeter, still watery, not richer.

2007-11-14 19:33:54

inconsistent on everything other than service- which is consistantly terrible

2007-11-12 09:46:43

I love the atmosphere. As a student it's sometimes difficult to find a place to focus, but I feel calm and comfort there. The Lattes are amazing. The prices are heavy but I don't go there everyday so it's not so bad. However, the evening lighting is not good for us students. Reading becomes difficult. I might prefer evenings at Hava Java. So there is still some competition for Coffee Matters maintaining certain potentially loyal customers.
Another thing I like about this location is that smoke doesn't enter the building the way it does in coffee shops on water street. Hava Java has a real issue with that, for instance, because many people smoke directly outside the door.., and on nice days the door is left ajar allowing too much smoke to enter. However, the lighting there is great, though very bright. I'm searching for a happy medium light place.
I like how the low light at Coffee Matters allows you to see outside quite well, but it is still a little too dark for comfort.

I was at coffee matters about three weeks ago, I came in sat down and had a cup of coffee. I was very relaxed until I heard one of the worker tell an employee to sweep the floors, the place was full of customers at the time, the young lady did what she was told but I could notice the a few other customers as well as me became disturbed. sorry, but I do not want to be drinking coffee with dust and dirt being mixed into the air..and my coffee. You should pick a time where it is lees busy to do that stuff, not while there are customers there, people don't like that.

2007-10-01 22:18:36

I loved the atmosphere at Coffee Matters, but the coffee didn't make a good first impression on me at all. My latte was terrible, and tasted mostly like warm water with a tiny bit of chocolate flavouring, no coffee or orange taste at all. I am hoping that any future trips will alter my opinion. I've heard good things about the coffee, but the lattes definitely need work.

2007-10-01 10:18:02

I very much enjoy the atmosphere of Coffee Matters and the location is just perfect. The Leonidas truffles were quite divine, the only complaint I would have is in regards to the lattes. I guess I've had probably 5 lattes there since it opened. They were quite bland and did not deliver the quality I would expect for an upscale coffee shop. Last night's Nirvana which is supposed to be chocolate and hazelnut was again disapointing. I do hope that the staff are directed to add more flavour to the beverages in the future. Looking forward to seeing an improvement in the near future.

2007-09-30 23:21:48

The atmosphere at Coffee Matters is fantastic. The coffee is horrible. I have visited Coffee Matters on three occasions and each time I was very disappointed in the quality of the coffee. On my most recent trip there I ordered a flavoured latte. Not only did it not have any raspberry flavour, it also didn't have any coffee flavour. It tasted like hot water with a little chocolate mixed in. I would love to go back, as it is a great place to relax with friends, but as long as the beverages are sub-par I will take my business elsewhere.

2007-09-08 04:45:50

I was in St John's two (2) weeks ago and I had lunch at your shop twice and I went for coffee twice. Both times the service was great and the coffee was great. The shop itself is a credit to the city. You have done a terrific job. Keep up the good work.

2007-09-05 22:17:43

I think that coffee matters is the best coffee shop downtown.. the chicken pesto sandwiches are AMAZING!!!!!! I go there everyday for lunch, oh and the carmel lattes are to die for and the alos the mango chai smoothies!! all the employees are wonderful and the service is great, it would be good if they were a bit faster on the sandwich making, I know some people are getting angry about the wireless internet time policy, but I guess the reason why they have that policy and hava java and coffee and company dont have it is because coffee matters is constantly busy, it's always packed with line ups out the door!! coffee and company and hava java doesnt get the great business that coffee matters gets. and if everyone just sat there on the computer for over an hour there would be no place for anyone else to sit, so unless you are going to be puschasing a drink every hour it's only polite to respect the policy and let others get the chance to sit and enjoy this amazing coffee shop.

2007-08-26 22:45:08

I am sitting here in Hava Java on Water Street, a competitor of Coffee Matters. WHile Hava Java is farther away from my home, I am so much happier here! Coffee Matters started out very promising -- nice sofas and chocolates. ANd I loved the location so close to my house. But the absolutely ridiculous policy that forces people to buy drinks every half and hour while they use the wireless -- and now I think there is no wireless available over lunch -- is so cheap and tacky. Hava Java, which has great (arguably better) coffee and much speedier service, would never dream of being so mercenary! The whole point of a coffee house is that people feel comfortable there ,not like cash cows, so they'll stay and, guess what, buy coffee. Coffee Matters would do well to learn that this wins hearts not nasty policies. SO far this morning at Hava Java I've had 2 lattes, fresh oj and a bagel ... business that Coffee Matters has lost ... and I will certainly have more before I go. And I've left some generous tips for the servers too. Now that's how to make money! It is also environmentally pernicious to force people to buy bottled water. COofee Matters better change their tune or they'll have a really hard time once the tourists leave.

2007-08-25 02:59:30

They started out great, like all the new coffee shops around town...but also following the lead of a few other shops, they make little changes that affect who comes there. I may be nit picking, but where's the raw sugar?? You lure us in with the good stuff and now all you have is the regular white sugar or some diet stuff that tastes like chemicals. Come on, keep up your reputation and bring back the raw sugar...you'll bring back customers that have left because of it. Don't ruin a good thing.

2007-08-15 12:16:36

I've been to Coffee Matters 4 times since it opened. Each time I felt the coffee and food were good but the service was very slow. When it first opened I could see this happening, but waiting for 15-20 minutes for a Latte is a bit too long.

2007-08-14 11:03:52

The desserts are heavenly, the food is great too. The beverages are also fantastic. Great view, plus the staff are so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable (unlike other downtown St. John's coffeehouses- Coffee )

2007-08-05 22:53:11

My wife and I visited Coffee Matters for the first time this weekend. It was busy upon our arrival but the staff were very efficent and we did not have to wait long for our order. The atmosphere was very welcoming as well as the view from the premises. The coffee was excellant. One of the owners was busy on the floor ensuring tables were cleared and seating was available, while I noticed the other owner was busy behind the counter attending to customers. It looks lke a lot of hard work has gone into getting this establishment up and running and initial impressions would indicate that their hard work is paying off.

2007-07-22 16:47:08

Great place...
but i am sitting here.. at just watched a customer ask for a glass of water for his partner.. he was told that they have bottled water.. ( sales pitch.. ok i can go for that )
did i mention the his partner was pregnant?
in anycase just minutes later.. another customer was up to the counter and got a glass of water.. no not bottled..
its as always.. the little things in life that make or break a business.

Top Notch! Tim Hortons assembly line coffee this isn't. Experience a coffee, espresso, capuccino hot chocolate, etc. etc. etc. made right in front of you from fresh beans by professional barrista's. Gorgeous surroundings & first class service & a huge selection of coffee's, freshly made desserts, soups, sandwiches & smoothies make this the place to go...if you can get a seat! Every time I go it's full, but the gracious staff go out of their way to take care of you. Lovely seating & a bright atmoshpere (2 full walls of windows assures an outside view) makes this new coffee house 5 Star!!!
